Report on the Acquisition and Use of Stage Drapes by Duns Players
Duns Players have successfully completed the acquisition and installation of a full set of stage drapes, forming a versatile and portable “pipe and drape” system. This valuable addition has enhanced our theatrical capabilities and supported our wider community engagement.
The drapes and supporting pipe framework—previously purchased in good condition—now enable us to construct fully adaptable stage sets. They function effectively as scene dividers and backdrop systems, giving us flexibility to vary the stage height between seven and twelve feet. Combined with our existing flats, the drapes allow for creative, lightweight, and easily transportable set designs that previously would have required substantial manual handling of plywood materials.
Beyond their aesthetic contribution, the drapes’ sound-absorbing qualities have proved highly effective within the Duns Volunteer Hall, particularly during events shared with our sister organization, Duns Playfest. They have enabled us to partition the hall effectively, controlling noise from the bar area and providing a more immersive experience for audiences.
The portability of the system has also revolutionized our theatre operations. We can now assemble the stage setup in around thirty minutes with two people, compared to the previous multi-hour effort by three. This has made performances in other community venues across the region more practical and efficient, vastly expanding our reach.
These improvements have already benefited our growing Secret Cabaret series, which features community guests and a variety of performance acts. The new drapes have improved both the visual quality and the professionalism of these productions, supporting our ambition to take the cabaret on tour.
In addition, the versatility of the system has strengthened our capacity to collaborate with local schools and community groups. It allows Duns Players to provide adaptable staging for educational events, fundraisers, and social gatherings, increasing participation and fostering new community relationships.
Overall, the completed pipe and drape system has delivered the benefits originally envisaged: aesthetic flexibility, efficient mobility, and broader accessibility to the performing arts. It represents a lasting enhancement to the cultural infrastructure of Duns, enriching both our productions and the wider community experience.
